Every once in a while, it’s fun to divert our focus from today’s real estate news to a few crazy real estate facts — things that prove that truth can indeed be stranger than fiction.
Did you know that when the Eiffel Tower was completed in 1889 that its designer, Gustave Eiffel, built a secret apartment within it at the top of the tower just for himself? While it’s now available for the public to tour, it’s interesting to note that Parisians envied the Tower during the designer’s lifetime simply because no one else could wake up on the morning to that view. And how about the idea of buying up all the homes around you and renting them back to their original owners so that no one knows exactly where you live? That’s exactly what Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg did. He did it to avoid the houses from being marketed as “next door to Mark Zuckerberg.” (The Mercury News)
Just because the Empire State Building was the place where movies depicted long lost lovers meeting at an appointed hour doesn’t mean it’s the most popular place to be on a permanent basis. Since the Empire State Building was opened during the Great Depression, much of its space initially went unrented. As a result, many New Yorkers referred to the building as the “Empty State Building.” Today, the building, at 350 Fifth Avenue has a vacancy rate of 22 percent, according to Fred Posniak, senior vice president at W & H Properties, the building’s manager. “About 45 percent of the current vacancy is intentional, with space being held off the market for renovation,” Posniak said. That translates to about 270,000 or 280,000 of the building’s 600,000 vacant square feet. The rest of the vacant space, about 320,000 square feet, is on the market. (TheRealDeal).
The tyrant with the abbreviated mustache once has his heart set on living in Hollywood. Adolf Hitler once owned a Hollywood mansion — one he never stepped foot in. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “The twisted metal gates just off Sullivan Ridge Fire Road in Rustic Canyon near Will Rogers State Park seem innocent enough to the casual dog walker or passing jogger, but for those in the know, the former Murphy Ranch offers a sinister look at Los Angeles history. The decrepit 50-acre estate tells the story of the Nazi Party's attempt to lengthen Adolf Hitler's reach into the United States by creating a fascist paradise near Malibu. The sprawling estate was reportedly meant to be a self-contained wonderland for Hitler and his followers.” (Hollywood reporter and LA Weekly)
Those us who float ideas can’t be compared to those who float full time. MS The World is the largest privately owned residential yacht on earth. It has 165 private residences and is constantly traveling around the world. That ticket for one of its 165 luxurious shipboard condos, by the way, can cost from $825,000 to $7.3 million. First, though, you'll have to prove your net worth exceeds $5 million. Then add another 10 percent to 15 percent of the purchase price for annual maintenance and other fees based on your apartment size. (Wikipedia, app.com)
As we all know, it’s hard to be a trailblazer. But when you are someone who is widely admired, you can garner support from some notable sources. When civil rights icon Rosa Parks’ home was robbed, she was forced to move— to a part of Detroit that offered her more safety but was also more than she could afford. Enter Mike Ilitch, owner of Little Caesar’s and the Detroit Tigers. Parks was assaulted in her home at the age of 81. Keith, himself an important legal figure in the civil rights movement, worked to find Parks a new, safer apartment at the Riverfront Apartments in Detroit and paid her rent until she died in 2005.
