Doubts to sprouts You've finally moved from an apartment into a home with a yard and it’s time to develop your green thumb. First off, if you’ve never planted a thing in your life, cut yourself some slack. As David Beaulieu from The Spruce reminds us, every gardener was once a beginner. New gardeners often worry: Will my soil grow anything? Is gardening expensive? What if everything dies? Overcoming these mental blocks is essential because anyone can grow something regardless of experience. Start small, keep it simple, and choose easy plants. Success builds upon itself, and mistakes become learning opportunities. If a plant dies, try another—it doesn't mean you lack gardening skills, just that the plant wasn't suited to your conditions. This is how you develop abilities over time. To determine which plants will thrive in your location, identify your USDA hardiness zone and match it with plant descriptions. Plants thriving in San Diego won't survive in Minnesota, and those flourishing in Atlanta might not endure a New York winter. Understand key gardening terms like perennial (plants returning yearly) and annual (single-season plants). Don't expect unsuitable perennials to survive your climate. Annuals offer more flexibility but naturally die in fall. Beginning gardeners only need two essential tools: a digging shovel with a sturdy, tapered blade and either a garden hose or watering can depending on garden size. A wheelbarrow, while not necessary, helps transport heavy items like fertilizer. At its most basic, gardening involves just working the soil, planting, watering, and fertilizing. Reach out for more!
