The real price of forgotten homes When a host on a reality TV show hunts for an abandoned property to flip, such as is the case with HGTV’s Detroit-based Bargain Block, you realize that it takes a trained eye as well as a hefty sense of the local market before they’ll make it into a Cinderella listing. While buying abandoned properties can be a bargain for homebuyers, you wonder — where do you find them? Realtor.com’s Angela Colley says, “‘Abandoned house for sale’" isn't a sign you're likely to see on the roadside.” She explains how an abandoned property is usually a property whose original owner is no longer in possession of the home. “Due to the owner's financial difficulties, the house is run-down and in desperate need of repair. If the law in your area allows you to claim this type of home and you're handy, it might be worth investigating.” It’s a pleasant surprise when an abandoned home for sale actually turns out to be in good condition, with the owner hoping to unload the property before foreclosure (which happened a lot during the 2008 real estate disaster, when the nation was rife with entire streets full of empty houses). Buying an abandoned or unclaimed property isn’t significantly different from buying any other piece of real estate, which means you should study your own financial feasibility first. Take into account that there will be additional expenses over and above the original sale price of the property, however. A preapproval from your lender will help you estimate what mortgage amount you qualify for, and many banks require them anyway.
