Decluttering: Living with less to de-stress Organized is organized, right? No equivocations. Things are either in their place or they’re not. Not so fast. NPR’s Andee Tagle offers a decluttering philosophy that you just might be able to live with. “When I sit at my desk, I’m constantly confronted by chaos,” she says, describing post-its in every color, candy wrappers, multiple headphones, books, and mugs of tea. “I can never seem to get a handle on my clutter, so I wondered —how can I clean up my space and keep it that way?” She enlisted the help of Star Hansen, a professional organizer who teaches classes on home organizing and has been featured in both TV shows and online series for her expertise. Hansen believes keeping your home neat and tidy is no one-shot deal, It’s a continual process that includes developing a number of good habits to replace those that don’t serve you. "What becomes clutter and where your clutter accumulates can say a lot about what's going on with you,” says Hansen. “If you have unwanted piles of stuff accumulating around your house, ask yourself: What's making this hard to get rid of? A lot of times, the trip-up is from holding on to the past or wanting a different reality than the one we're living in.” For instance, perhaps hanging on to that skirt that used to fit ten years ago means you’re yearning for your former profession or a nostalgic relationship. That pile of chopsticks in your kitchen drawer? Perhaps it’s your stab at assuaging your guilt over waste and sustainability. As Lucy says when trying to help Charlie Brown from her psychiatrist’s booth, "The mere fact that you realize you need help indicates that you are not too far gone. We'd better pinpoint your fears. If we can find out what you're afraid of, we can label it.” Reach out for more! NPR, TBWS
