Front Yard 2025: Where Climate-Smart Meets Cottage Wild Just as design experts predict trends for interior design in 2025, so The Spruce’s Michelle Mastro gets us up to speed with what might be happening outside. After the holidays, it makes us happy to think about spring being just around the corner anyway… “With concerns about climate change and new water law restrictions underway, homeowners are going to be more interested in drought-tolerant plants in their front yards,” says Mastro. She enlists the help of Laura Janney, expert gardener and owner of The Inspired Garden, and for a starter votes for ornamental grasses, which thrive in heat and drought, adding lovely textures and interest throughout the seasons. To this list she adds yarrow, Russian sage, Agastache (a cool pollinator plant), coneflower, salvia, catmint, and more to consider. Instead of thinking Versailles-style formal gardens, think cottage-style controlled-yet wild looks for your yard. Go au naturel this year with cottage gardens and meadow-scapes. “Homeowners are increasingly wanting more natural but more colorful gardens with flowers that bloom throughout the year,” Janney says, reminding us that this trend began in 2024 and will only grow stronger throughout 2025. To get the look, incorporate more soft and less structured perennials in layers with different bloom times, heights and textures. “An easy way to do this is to place flowers in more of a zigzag pattern versus straight rows," Janney says.
