Selling a ‘white elephant’ house comes with its challenges “It’s so unique. It’s one of a kind. You’ve never seen anything like it before…” when it comes to houses, that statement can become a double-edged sword. While what might be referred to as a “quirky” home might help its builder/owner live out the adventure of a lifetime, for some owners selling it becomes its Achilles heel. Realtor.com's Kiri Blakely tells the story of Seattle’s Ann Levengood, who decided to let go of her beloved double-dome home two hours outside of Seattle. She thought she did everything a seller needed to do to get a good price, including having added a new ($50K) roof, new drainage, new retaining walls, landscaping, a completely renovated interior, new lighting, and new skylights — all leading to zero tasks upon inspection, she told Blakeley. “The inspector had never seen such a clean house,” she added. Pricing the property was her first clue something might be amiss however, when she and her agent didn’t see eye to eye. She wanted to list it at $425,000, while her cautious agent listed it at $339,000. The home’s double domes held it back, making it difficult to find the proper buyer for such a home, but it is also challenging to find comparable listings. “Even so, the home took only two months to close a sale at full price, leaving Levengood with the lingering feeling that she had been stiffed,” says Blakely. The agent “recently told us that it was a hell of a place, but that doesn’t help us out now,” says the owner, adding that she believes agents were “prejudiced” against the house. “I couldn’t even get agents to come out and see it,” she says.
