Is it time for a bathroom makeover? The easiest thing to do, of course, is to merely change out a countertop, add some new fixtures and sinks, maybe paint the cabinets. But why not consider thinking outside the box a bit, taking a look at bathroom trends?
Bathrooms were once considered “necessary” rooms, used only for hygiene. Well, perhaps it was a place where kids could lock the door and keep your brothers and sisters away for a while. Today, however, they are spaces used for relaxation, beauty, and contemplation. For that you need space, so if it’s possible to expand your bathroom a bit, why not explore it? The space that hallway linen closet takes up that backs up to the bathroom might be better used to make room for a stand-alone tub or to permit two vessels instead of one on your countertop. If there are no expansion possibilities, however, it’s still wise to think big — big floor tiles and bath surround tiles give the illusion of size. Besides, there is less grout with bigger tile so that you may thank yourself later on.
You can also optimize the storage space in your bathroom with oversized recessed medicine cabinets that house an abundant number of cosmetics, shaving needs and even medicinal items. Newer bathroom consoles come complete with compartments in drawers and even hidden outlets for appliances so that cords are out of sight. And floating wall shelves can take up vertical spaces accommodating towels and other things that clutter countertops. The cleaner the space is, the bigger it appears. Opt for modular furniture with simple and straight shapes and decorate sparingly. Wall-hung vanities look great an can be lit from underneath, making your bathroom look like something from a magazine.
Get creative with surfaces. Ceramic tiles are popular for showers and floors, including porcelain. New designs offer various geometric patterns, and there are also ceramics that imitate higher-end materials like wood and marble or even concrete.
Consider 86ing the existing tub-shower combo for a generously-sized shower if the bathroom is small. Open showers have become increasingly popular; multi-functionally equipped shower include the integration of a bench, a steam system, an ambient mirror, a linear drain linear drain, etc. Storage crevices hold shampoo, shower gel, and soap. And once the tub is gone, the room can look twice as large.
It used to be that wood was the last thing you’d want in a bathroom. But today’s bathrooms use plenty of it, offering a warm and natural atmosphere to the room by integrating it into storage and made-to-measure pieces of furniture. As long as you are disciplined about wiping up accumulations of water from it near your shower, wood breathes well and naturally absorbs moisture, making it a very popular option for the bathroom. If that doesn’t appeal to you, wood look-alike tile can fool even the most astute visitor.
