Room service: waking up to luxury in your own bedroom.

___

“Design is coming to grips with one's real lifestyle, one's real place in the world. Rooms should not be put together for show but to nourish one's well-being.” -- Albert Hadley

Vacation — what your average weekday at the office has you daydreaming about between phone calls and emails. You shake your head because it seems so far off. But what if you could bring the kind of comforts you’re used to experiencing in those luxury hotels into your own home?

There are a host of ways to add a touch of class to your home without breaking the bank, but we’ll concentrate on your bedroom for the purposes of keeping things simple. Think about that hotel room in Las Vegas overlooking the strip. What was so special about it? Was it the Egyptian cotton sheets and the stacks of fluffy pillows, all graced by a color-coordinated throw draped over the end of the bed? The floor-to-ceiling drapery that blocked out the sun? The strategically-placed lighting? The calming colors and artwork coordinated throughout the room?

You deserve this on vacation, but why not at home? Okay — maybe pieces of wrapped chocolate on the pillows are a bit much, but isn’t it worth it to experience even a small version of this kind of luxury in your daily existence?

Here are a few things you can make a project out of your inner sanctum to create a lavish lifestyle:

Make sure your bed takes center stage. If you can’t “spring” for a better mattress right now, add a plump, comfy mattress topper to it. Don’t worry about hurting your mother’s feelings because she bought you a wool blanket way back when as a wedding present. Nothing is meant to be used forever. Get to one of those home decor places that sells bed linens at severe discounts and look for plump pillows, high thread-count, deep-pocket sheets, and a down comforter. A plush duvet cover and a color-coordinated throw to toss over the corner of the bed, and you get the idea.

Just because your headboard matches the rest of your bedroom furniture doesn’t mean you have to keep using it. Tufted, padded headboards can be bought online and delivered for free to your door. Now you can lay your head against a plush backstop while celebrating the moments of your life.

Hotels carefully plan out the design and decor of both their public and private spaces. So try to think like a designer. Guest rooms boast side lamps usually attached to the wall to leave space on matching side tables, a cozy chair, an armoire for clothing, and even a television well-hidden inside a beautiful cabinet. No need for the small dining table or desk, of course. Concentrate on quality over quantity, and you’ll get that uncluttered haven you’ll love to be surrounded by and sink into each evening.

It’s unfortunate the bedroom is the one room homeowners tend to skimp on simply because most guests will never see it. If you want a sanctuary that keeps on giving the gift of luxury, however, it’s your bedroom that can offer that “vaycay” feeling any morning of the week — even when you have to go into the office early.
