When you live in a home long enough, you sometimes consider repainting parts of the interior. Perhaps the color you chose or the house had when you purchased it is outdated. But when a major color change is not in the offing how do you know when it’s time to give it a fresh coat of paint?
The Spruce’s Jodi Gonzalez says interior paint is often overlooked by some home dwellers. “Adding a new color can completely change a room’s look and feel—even another layer of the current color can make a difference,” she says. So she asked several home design and paint experts to offer tips for knowing what signs to look for when your walls need to be repainted.
The first is the fade out. We’re not talking about movie scenes. We’re talking once-vibrant walls that begin to look dull and sad — as if that coat of paint has reached the end of its life. The color begins to look uneven, especially in various kinds of lighting. The best way to determine this is to switch on an overhead light or draw your curtains back so natural light can filter through. “Exposure to sunlight, moisture, and other environmental factors can cause the paint on your walls to fade or change color,” says paint expert Rick Hernandez. When you turn up the light on a given room, you may also notice mold or mildew growing on your walls, so it's important to address the problem as soon as possible.
Got bubbles popping up on your wall or ceiling surfaces? This can happen especially in humid rooms like the bathroom. Pros tell us none of this should be happening if the paint was put on properly or if it was the correct paint for the dynamics of the space. “If the paint on your walls is peeling or cracking, it's a clear sign that the paint is no longer adhering properly to the surface,” says Hernandez.
Stains can happen especially in the kitchen or other high-traffic areas. “Most stains can be removed by a quick wipe with a towel, a professional cleaning service, or even a Magic Eraser if needed,” says Gonzalez. “However, if that fails to get a stubborn spot off the wall, it's time to consider refreshing the space.” She says experts recommend painting over your existing color or giving something else a try if nothing seems to remove the stains.
That yellow-gold wall color might have been appealing to you when you first bought your home, but are you really feeling it anymore? “If you're feeling disconnected from your current space, take the time out to really understand where that's coming from because your home should feel comfortable and uplift you as you walk in,” says Gonzalez, who adds that the colors we live in can impact us emotionally. “The color may be the culprit if there's nothing else bothering you.”
It’s amazing how repainting your home in a color you love can brighten up not just your environment, but also create a calming, comfortable place to come home to. “When you think of things that way, the price of a coat of paint seems like a bargain for improved peacefulness in your surroundings,” says Gonzalez.
